Is Ileana going to Spain to arrange her wedding

February 18, 1928

Is Princess Ileana going to Madrid in March to arrange her wedding? This is what the AP reports today as rumors of an engagement are circulating in Bucharest. Ileana's aunt, Infanta Beatriz of Spain, is "understood to be in charge of the negotiations." The bridegroom has not been named, but one possible candidate is King Alfonso XIII's eldest son, the Prince of Asturias.

Marlene, Pakula's book "Queen of Romania" says that Queen Marie was upset about this proposed marriage:
"The greatest argument against such a marriage would be Alfonso (King Alfonso XIII), much more even than the invalid husband...Alfonso ...makes up to every woman and then has a way of declaring that they threw themselves at his head. A pretty daughter-in-law, wife of his invalid son would no wise be safe from him."
...The Dowager Queen spoke from family experience, Baby Bee (Marie's sister) a former object of the King's attentions, had been banished from Spain when she was young for just this reason. Now, even the fifty-three-year-old Dowager Queen found the King of Spain difficult to handle. 'One has to be exceedingly careful with him...age, position, attitude, nothing stops him...it would be quite impossible for a young woman to have anything to do with him.'
Much to Marie's relief, the romance soon died down.
