Polish monarchists seek Duke of York for throne

April 15, 1926

It seems that a "section of the Polish people" want to convert the Republic of Poland into a monarchy, and they want to offer the throne to King George V's second son, the Duke of York," reports the Associated Press, based on a dispatch from the Daily Mail in Warsaw.

The Warsaw-based reporter is "says the idea of giving Poland a king is gaining ground."  Monarchists hope that if the nation "adopts their view," they will be able to persuade the Duke of York to "accept the crowd."

Such aspirations are scoffed at in the local political circles as "such aspirations on the part of Polish monarchists" are not likely to see their aspirations come to fruition.  The Albanians tried to "induce" Prince Arthur of Connaught, a first cousin of King George V, to accept their offer of a throne.  He declined before Prince Wilhelm of Wied accepted the offer in 1914.

It can also be "safely assumed" that members of the British royal family "prefer the comparative surety" of their own country to the political instability in central Europe.

The Duke of York was married in 1923 to the Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who is said to be expecting the couple's first child later this month.

Wasn't the Earl of Wessex in the late 1990s/early 2000s also offered the throne?
